Yemen
The Bab al-Yaman, “Gate of the Yemen”, in Sana’a will transport you back to biblical times. The blind sit patiently by the opening, as does the scribe, and street vendors. This gate grants you entrance through the fortified wall and into a labyrinth of narrow streets, brick buildings, and mud skyscrapers that pierce the sky. We visited Yemen in 1988 and it remains one our favorite destinations of all time. We saw it all…ghat dealers, steamy hammams, silver and janbiyah sellers, covered women, coffee merchants, souqs, and crenelated houses. One of the oldest continually inhabited cities; Sana’a’s Old City is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.
