Syria
Damascus and Aleppo are two of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. Prior to the civil war it was one of our favorite travel destinations. Damascus is home to the Souk al-Hamidiyeh, the Umayyad Mosque, and the Street Called Straight where St. Paul regained his eyesight. In addition we enjoyed the covered souk of Aleppo, the waterwheels of Hama, and the ancient desert city of Palmyra. We also visited the town of Ma’aloula, one of the last two villages in the world that still speak Aramaic, the language of Jesus. Everywhere we traveled we were welcomed into homes or Bedouin tents as family.
