Forming a giant mandala, the 9th century site of Borobudur in Indonesia is the world’s largest Buddhist temple and embodies a cosmological model of the universe. The top, crowned by a great central stupa, representing Nirvana, is empty. We were fortunate to explore this temple. As we climbed the step pyramid in the early morning, it appeared to float above the verdant jungle of Central Java.
